Today I got out of storage my Sokkia GSr 2700 after not using for some time. Fired up the RTK base & rover. Both were able to set as base & rover.

I think the internal radios have a length capacity of 1.5 km or so but when I did some random testing to see if RTK still works, farthest distance that I was able to get an RTK fix was ~700m. When the base & rover are less than 20 meters apart, fix is achieved in less than 5 minutes after initialization.

It has been a while since I used these units (maybe 2 years+), can someone refresh me & let me know if there is a message or setting that says the rover is out of range of the base?

From the controller there is a message that PDOP is x.xx or dx,dx,dz is x.xx.

Satellites seen are in the 9-10 numbers so I am a bit confused if I am doing something wrong.

Franz, is this the GSR2700 ISX? The only voice message you'll get is 'RTK lost'. If you have the 'config' tool you could check the base radio power setting. 'Factory reset' by holding down the on button is another option to try. The last firmware release by Sokkia before 'end of life' was 3.701. Novatel, the receiver board manufacturer, have available 3.906

The only way I ever knew if my base went down/stopped transmitting was my data collector would show "Autonomous" instead of float or fixed. No voice warning was given.

I have the gsr 2700 isx so I'm sure it's a little different. I found my range extremely limited, to less than a quarter mile over an open area. I bought the longer antenna's and the range was increased. It's still line of sight but at least it's a longer line of sight!

Accuracy Limit Settings?

Mine is the ISX, not sure what the X stands for. When I was using it several years ago, I remember I could get 1km + from base. We don't use it much because RTK is pretty much useless for areas with tall buildings or many trees.

We were toying with the idea of using it for a utility survey in isolated highways.
I use a default of 0.05 error limit in x,y,z . I need more accuracy than this. Is is safe to use it with tolerance of 0.02? Or is this stretching the machines capabilities?

Accuracy Limit Settings?

As usual the answer is 'it depends'. I've certainly managed repeatability better than 0.02m, that was checked against total station survey of the points. GPS and Glonass satellites, clear views of the sky, bipod and averaging 10 readings. I've always had reasonable range of around a kilometre with the short antennas and up to 6km with the long ones but that's in fairly open country. Another item to check is that your base is transmitting and your rover is receiving RTCMv3 messages.

The ISX was the next model up from the IS, mine has been pretty dependable for 9 years now, issues have mostly been with firmware.

Hi everyone.
I'm Argi Castro from Spain and it ' s my first time in the foro.
I'm a SOKKIA GSR2700ISX owner and I've just got them wromg. Firrstly the Base antena was down because It wasn't able to achieve the OK status, "GPS OK" . The lights begin the secuency but they return to the beginning several times, and a red light is on the main switch. The day after it was my rover unit that began to do the same too. So that I've lost both, and the TOPCON-SOKKIA service in Spain says that it's the end of my GPS equipe, bacause of t he costs of reparation. It seems to be a "programmed die ''.

Well, has anybody idea about this problem?. I should be very gratefull to hear about.
About the distance to get FIXED status for rover unit my experience is that it's able to get signal from base more than 6 Km (in good conditions), with normal antenna. I've set my UHF emission to 1 watt. Is it possible for you to set it in that leve!??

Thanks in advance for everyone.

New firmware. For sure. And fresh batteries. Or if you can, use external batteries.

Hi Nate,
Thanks a lot for your interest. Do you think is possible to introduce the new firmware in the Receivers despite of their abnormal situation?. I've not the wire for COM port conexion but I can try to get it. How can I get the last version of the firmware for my GSR2700 ISX?. Here in Spain it's not a common GPS, so that it's not easy to find someone knowing about this.

In adittion of the previous post, do you think it's not a hardware problem but only a software problem?. Now I'm thinking in dropping then to the river.

Well, I don't have any of those... But I do have legacy e's. I'm sure you'll need a wire. And probably would need an older Windows xp based machine, with serial ports. And, I suspect some software for communicating... And the firmware... Should get advice from somebody who owned some at one time, or a dealer... Who has advice...

You can download from ftp://ftp.novatel.ca/outgoing/support/Software/OEMV/ the latest firmware 3.907. I have upgraded with no issues, but I am using one ISX as network rover, don't know if base-rover have issues.
Then send to [email protected] the LOG VERSION command output and request the auth code of your receiver.
See the instructions i attached.
You need special cable to do the upgrade. I bought one from ebay but it is not cheap.
see http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SOKKIA-GPS-instrument-cables-FOR-SOKKIA-403-0-0036-10-PIN-cable-/151871667943?hash=item235c41bee7&apos ;">here and http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-SOKKIA-GPS-instrument-cables-FOR-SOKKIA-403-0-0036-10-PIN-cable-/151750951534?hash=item23550fc26e&apos ;">here
The board from novatel is EOL unfortunately so i don't know if they will release new firmware in the future.

Like gto234 I did the upgrade, for my base - rover receivers, with no issues. I used the serial cable and a Win7 pc with a serial port.

Check that the base is sending rtcmv3 corrections and the rover receiving them.

Check whether the batteries are holding charge, you should get a days rtk work. Replacements are available on ebay, even they are becoming old stock now, doubtful if those will be stored at half charge indefinitely. External is the other option.

Clear out the internal memory on both units as well and re format the cards.

Sokkia Planning v4.21 is still available on some Sokkia web pages, it has the powerup utility for sending configurations to the receivers + downloading Sokkia pdc files for conversion to rinex.

Argi, I've jusr re read your post - the red led suggests the battery is low, you should be getting an audible warning about that, maybe the firmware isn't functioning properly. When the battery gets really low the receiver switches off. You could try waiting to see if it does, then follow up with a long charge and maybe factory reset.

Do you have the manual that comes with the receiver? If not I'll check if I have a pdf version which I could email to you.-

Another simple thing you could check - that the antenna connections are clean and screwed tight.

Just had a look at my base and the manual - you mean the red-yellow led's above the on off button. According to the manual they light up when starting but should be off during normal operation. The manual explains various red yellow flashing sequences for errors/warnings but not for red only.

The difference between an IS and ISX is mainly the addition of Glonass.

Thanks a lot for your interest.
Well, the battery was OK when It went on wrong state on both, Base and rover. I was able to work for seven hours with then. Iå«ve tried after full charge and it repeated the same cycle of lights, first red/yellow 2", off, red/yellow 5", off, only red 25", off, and begins again. The bluetooth light flash blue and stay red. The on/off key don't work ( I've to take off the batteries for shut it down).
Iå«m looking for getting a Com wire to try updating the firmware but I'm not optimist at all.
