I've recently purchased a used Topcon GPT-9005 and the batteries that came with it don't last very long at all. I've bought the power cord for the instrument to run off a 12v battery and a starter jump box to power it, just not too sure if I'm supposed to clip the two ends of the cable to the two jumper clamps or if I'm missing a step in between. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Geo 600 and clipping to the jumper clamps works for me (usually). One time we got a jumper battery that wouldn't work. If I recall correctly, this one had some kind of protection system in it that wouldn't let the power flow unless it detected it was hooked up something that was drawing a lot of power, and the robot didn't meet that criteria. But I've used 4 or 5 others that worked fine.

You can also get a jumper kit with a "cigarette lighter" plug, and a cable that plugs into that. That also has worked fine for me.

Newer jump batteries have a circuit protection that does not output any power unless it is attached to an actual battery.

Most have an on/off switch.

All my cables have the 12v plug.

I took my booster pack apart and installed one of these directly to the battery:

Then cut off the alligator clips and about 5 foot of excess wire and installed the matching sae connector to the converter box. I also wired in an sae connector on the 5 foot of wire I cut off just in case my booster was dead, I could still connect it to the truck.

Tom,

I run a TOPCON 802 and approached this the same way you are; I purchased the TOPCON power adapter and replaced the alligator clips with a 12V cigarette lighter plug with an LED. I plug this into a jump start pack with an 18 amp hour battery. Runs the unit for several days in robotic mode.
