I have always wondered about the private tracks on both sides of Mackinac Bridge. I have thought it could be they wanted land on both Lake Michigan and Huron, but maybe it is also related to the idea of ribbon farms.
Here is a GLO map, hard to see, but there are 20 East-West parcels that cover about 2 miles North-South. Hope to get a client in that area and explore more.
The article talks about Canada. However, areas of Ohio also had original subdivisions in narrow strips instead of sections. The map Original Land Subdivisions of Ohio shows narrow strips near the southern tip of Ohio, in the French Grants, as well as the Donation Tract, Virginia Military District and other widely separated areas of the state.
