Recovered this Center of Section this morning. In 1896 the county surveyor set an oak stake at the intersection of the quarter corners. In 1911 the same surveyor set an iron pipe over the oak stake. The monuments were found buried 3' below the gravel road. The position is 4.47' west and 3.07' north of the mathematical center. Accepted the monument with the evidence found.

Looks like a good recovery. Did you upgrade the location with something closer to the surface with references? When I first got into surveying it was still common practice to hide such finds by some who seemed to think such action resulted into job security.

Reburied the monument and wood as found and then set a 1"x30" pipe with aluminum cap over top of the original monument. Then set reference ties and will make a full recovery report as well as filing a survey.

I remember hot days in Nebraska; start early enough to be able to start measuring as soon as you could see and getting off before it got to hot....:-D
I remember setting a center of section too:
Sitting on the east quarter corner, sighting the west quarter corner and setting straddles. Sitting on the south quarter corner and sighting the north quarter corner, measuring around the section and the quarter we were surveying with a TII and a 100' chain(steel tape), in a day.
It amazes me, standing on the Willamette Stone and looking to the north, that the surveyors of the Pacific Northwest were able to get to where I am, let alone Spokane, and be anywhere close to reality....
I hope everyone stays cool today, it's about 60f and cloudy with a chance of showers here....
