I have to admit my experience with a total station is very limited. I did some minor work with a newer Trimble and that is it. But I have shot grade and used old school methods for geo locates for a long time.

I did consider just setting up a basic template in Excel to run the math for me and I can create a dynamic plot map in Excel that could work. I can just enter the coordinates and the EDM measurement and set the values in that. However, I figured there might be some basic program floating around that would do this for me.

To vaguely explain what I primarily will need to use it for, I am starting a new personal construction project in which I will have a vast range of wires and pipes in the ground. I will want to establish a map of the property and establish XY points and the depth of every pipe and wire as they go in. This is so if I ever need to do more trenching or excavation, I can always find out how much dirt cover I have over these utilities.

From experience today, I usually throw a wire in the ground with any pipe so I can locate it but knowing the depth is really helpful.

I will probably also just use this as my level reference rather than a rotary laser just because it is so easy and insanely accurate at close range.
