I'm guessing you're trying to figure out how much chrap you are going to have to chip/chisel/dig through to find a section/PLSS corner of some sort last seen about 1996?

Sounds like someone is doing some first order leveling and needs to account for the asphalt thickness in the LSA!!!

Winner winner chicken dinner!

Already done; RR Spike 0.8' down. Here in IL:

765 ILCS 220/7) (from Ch. 133, par. 60-7)
Sec. 7. It shall be the duty of any land surveyor who conducts a survey which uses as a control corner any public land survey monument, to record with the recorder or Registrar of Titles in the county in which the survey was conducted, a written monument record describing such monument, or position thereof, and its accessories. Such a surveyor shall also record a monument record whenever he establishes, re-establishes, restores or rehabilitates any public land survey monument. Each monument record shall describe at least three accessories or reference points.

Parcel is the W 1/2 of the SW 1/4. The only MR is for the SW corner of the section, found the mon & checked the ties, fit like a glove. Found the RR spike at the W 1/4, 1" pipe at the N 1/4, MAG Nail at the E 1/4, and a PK Nail at the S 1/4. Found all the mons for my parcel (1" pipe & nails in the road), plus a 5 acre cutout at the south end.

What I'm trying to figure out is why my predecessor did not hold the RR spike at the W 1/4 corner; if I hold the PK at the E 1/4 and go through the 2 pipes at the N end of my parcel I miss the RR spike by 4.8'; but it mathces the description spot on.

Going back out now to investigate further.

Here's a good one. I went to record the monument record for the corners I found (some of which were still painted). Was told I am the first one to record a monument record this year. In a county with 1,152 square miles.

Typically about 1/4" or less for the common chip and seal application. But, these are additive as they occur about once every two or three years. The road oil is the sealant and the chips are just there to provide some wear resistance and permit more rapid return to usage for drivers.

Rob, it will make you beat your head against the wall won't it? I've also worked in parts of the state where nobody records monument records. You will often find two or three monuments for a corner, you will often see all sorts of cross ties, usually nail and bottle caps, and not a single monument record. The only thing I can say is someone is going to have to start turning these people in for not putting monument records in the court house. You can find their plats recorded, so it wouldn't be hard to match the plats up with monmument records, or lack there of.

I looked through the tract books at the recorder, but I didn't find any plats for that area. The client said that the person she purchased the land from had a survey done about 2006, but he can't find it. I'm still hoping to get a hold of a copy.

I ended up chiseling out a MAG Nail at the corner that the previous guy used for the W 1/4 corner; ends up checking within 0.13' of the split between the NW & SW corner of the section and the N adjoiner's deed, so now I have to re-file the monument record with the correct corner. I know I should have checked the split yesterday, but I put too much faith in the RR spike and on the way there I thought of all the lessons learned the hard way that I ignored. I will now go to box and feel shame.

Is the Jackson Street Pub still there? I make my kids Ponies every year on New Years Eve in honor of my time spent in Macomb. WIU Class of '94, Industrial Tech. Met my better half at the start of JR year, was a bouncer at Swanee's Office, and spent too much time at The Ritz instead of the library. I ended up going through the SIU Surveying program at Joliet Junior College in order to take the SIT/PLS.

Yeah, the Jackson Street Pub is still here. The Ritz and Swannes is gone. I started working here in 1984 so you never know, we might have seen each other.

Rob, you know you want to rent a backhoe. Did it occasionally in Southern Illinois. They dont like that stuff up here, but sometimes the jack hammer has to come out. Gets me thinking, those out there with knowledge may help, would ground pentrating radar be able to discern a stone under pavement? How has the fishing been lately?

My subordinate employee is from Southern Illinois; he went to SIU and worked for an Engineering firm there in the 90s.

He has some pretty sharp comments about idiot hunters coming down from Chicago and shooting farm animals because the literally don't know what a deer looks like and don't care about property lines.

Yeah the stone is probably 4-5' down, but not under either the RR spike or the nail. Probably closer to the old wood post fence line about 5' north. I've only hit the river once this year; no smallies yet, but I did catch the biggest drum I've ever seen. Absolutely destroyed a floating minnowbait.

Heard a story about 10 years back where a guy shot a cow elk that escaped from a game farm during shotgun deer season, thinking it was a big whitetail doe. It's basically impossible to get permission to hunt private land in IL unless you know someone, because of all the clowns from the city who don't know what they're doing. I've heard all kinds of first hand stories, from leaving trash & beer cans on peoples property, leaving field gates open so that livestock gets out, etc.

He said they routinely took down deer stands on their property or within just a few feet of the property line. You don't want those guys seeing a deer and getting all pumped up on adrenaline so they just start throwing wild shots everywhere.

They put red blankets on their horses so hopefully they wouldn't get shot.
