Our geotech guys brought me over a list of some boreholes that they did last year. They have lat and long on them that they collected with a handheld gps. They want to know if I can go out and locate them and get elevations. My site is in SPC and is already calibrated. Can it put these on a spread sheet and import them in to my site and they come in at the right location within reason? If I can my plan is to get x,y's and go out and look for the stakes or evidence of a bore hole, and shoot what I find. Thanks for any help/advice offered.

You will need to know what datum was exported from the handheld. With the options on mine it could move me around 100 meters or more in this area.

It would be great if their handheld still holds the location of those waypoints.

Then you could use their handheld and track back to their location.

😉

Come on Roadie, you are a very smart man and knows where even bears do the doo doo. My short answer is a profound NO. Let your boss/signer of plat tell you what to do. You are the expert guy in the field and no doubt that exact expert he/she relies on, they are the guys with the "liability".

Anybody hands me a bunch of coordinates, lats, longs, elevations... this homey is gonna verify it all, regardless of the source. Thus I take on the liability. It has nothing to do with software, especially Trimble (they are more goofy than warshingtoon if that's even possible)

Or I go golfing, fishing, find another survey in the case that they don't like my fee (likely).

that's just a wingnut talkin', and you know what I mean. 😉

Cheers man, hope to meet ya for the Lord's Trophy. I like that... the Star Wings. Or would it be the Red Stars...lol

Roadie -

More likely than not the lat/longs from the handheld are in WGS84/ITRF. If you create a project in TBC using the coordinate system "State Plane 1983 (ITRF to NAD83)" and then key in or import the lat/longs as Global coordinates the software will perform the transformation to NAD83 and project the points to whatever state plane zone you select. Bear in mind that you'll probably also need some value for ellipsoid height if you want to stake to them; I would typically just get an elevation for the area and subtract a representative geoid separation.
