I was in northern Republic County, Kansas yesterday and came across this interesting railroad box culvert next to a road underpass built in 1907. Bonus was that there was a USC&GS bench mark on top! That railroad culvert had a roof with rail laid crossways and then concrete aggregate poured on top. When the railroad was abandoned, the road was straightened leaving the concrete underpass alone on the hilltop. The embankment on top of the railroad culvert was either removed or washed out. The road underpass was most likely built with horse/wagons in mind since there were probably few autos at that time. The road was straightened in 2006, so nearly a century of auto use. To the west of the underpass is a deep cut where the county road exists now.

No doubt about when that one was built.
