I have been in negotiations lately with a law firm for some consulting that would involve a site survey, exhibit preps and testimony. It is a personal injury suit with a utility company named as defendants.

I can't say I wouldn't enjoy it. Once in a while I like to get duded-up and walk into the 'lion's den' and play verbal chess with the legal boys.

Got the call today they have decided to run with the outfit that has laser scanning capabilities. They were impressed with the graphics that can be generated. I can't disagree with their decision. Seeing how this appears to be headed to a jury trial, the dazzling exhibits will only be a plus.

Being a small job (fees probably less than 10K) I wasn't too disappointed we didn't get the work. I was hoping my experience in the legal arena would overshadow the shiny bells and whistles. Guess it didn't.....(sigh) guess I'll go home and throw back a shot of Geritol and watch Lawrence Welk re-runs...;-)

Now I know the feeling back when we were using EDMs & got a lot of work because of these "new" bells & whistles.

I still remember that our company was selected over their long time surveyors because they were still using theodolites.

Now I am on the other end of the stick...:-(

I can see there side of it.
If i was a lame i would rather scanning data than just a drawing with some lines and symbols on it. it helps explain the point they are trying to get across.
I love scanning its not much work for a better result in my eyes.

Once upon a time, I made surveys in connection with personal injury lawsuits with some regularity, mostly railroad grade crossing surveys, but a few others mixed in as well. At the time, they seemed mildly interesting if you overlooked the fact that you were surveying the spot where someone had gotten killed or maimed and that very seldom were substantial surveying matters at issue. Basically, it was just mapping for a model or an animation.

In retrospect, I think they were mostly a waste of time for anyone who didn't intend to make a specialty of just that. The sorts of referrals that they generated were just other personal injury attorneys. It beats mapping fire plugs or sewer manholes, but not by that much, really.

Around here some of the cops are using laser scanners at accident scenes. They had total stations a few years ago and now they have moved up.

And remember that on a per-dose basis, Wild Turkey can be cheaper than Geritol. I'd definitely be going with the Turkey if I had to deal with Lawrence Welk.

What a succinct way to say it! I like it.

It's the entertainment value, Kent

You are correct. The field work would be small and almost insignificant. I enjoy the humor (that I see) in the legal profession's "quest for righteous ajudication".

I can see I'm an old windbag. But I'm honest about it (and probably proud of it). It's just hilarious to watch folks full of more crap than me walk around acting like they're some saviour of the down-trodden. Besides, the E.W. fees are lofty and it's close to Christmas.

Yes, I'll agree I have a warped sense of humor.
