I have to retrace a patented mining claim.... right now I haven't found a single corner... I was thinking I'd re-group and use a tie from the 1938 highway plans as a last resort/ only available evidence...this is a letter form 1938...

the south end of the claim, was enveloped in the interstate fill- the north end looks like the corners were lost to the 1910 fire and/ or the BPA pioneer road... :-/

The Plat indicates several Open Cuts, a 40+ ft. long adit (tunnel), and a Shaft.

I didn't see a link to the Field Notes, but I would get those, and start by finding the "workings" mentioned above. There were also several building mentioned, which even if gone now, the footing or foundations (and such) may still be recoverable.

It's a "wood" post survey, but that doesn't mean that they ain't still there (in some form or another). 1907 isn't really all that OLD!

Here's a few more snips
these are the 1970 I 90 RW

note where the I90 cl is in relation to the bldgs and the hwy 10 rw

here's a snip of the mineral survey

this is my guess at the north corners an the shaft

a little more back ground.
the project is state planr- opus projects control
convergence angle on this end of the state is about -4^ 29'

GLO frac. sub of township 1898
mineral survey 1907
1910 fire
resurvey of east bdry of T19NR32W 1913

we contacted BPA for info- their corner cards show no recovery for the plss corners.
they didn't mention having anything on the mineral cors, but they had to get an easement to cross the claim.
USFS has data on the s and east bdrys of the section.

my initial search locations were developed using the mineral survey record and applying convergence, based om the w1/4 of S7( kinda found).

Loyal has very good advice. I would find traces of the workings and improvements. Normally the bearings are very good to astronomic but the 1/4 corner is a fairly long tie to bring in. I have found remains of the wood posts after a fire by scraping the ground with a shovel. Getting to the scraping point is the difficult part! 🙂

Have you looked at the "connection diagram" yet (assuming that there is one), that "might" give a clue to a later Survey in the area that could be helpful.

Even Unpatented Mineral Surveys can be a game changer (if there are any in the area).

You might look for the Original Location Corners as well (something is always better than nothing).

I agree that Loyal's advice is good - I wasn't too thrilled about the 1854' tie to the 1/4- that's got a lot of room for error....this is the quad.
.
.

was really hoping for a chance a t a BT, they were pretty good size at the time they were marked. 14"- 20" fir and pines and there are several stumps in the vic of corner 1 and a few still standing fir. we got some positions for them and will cipher on those a bit before we take the next trip out.

haven't looked at the connection diagram yet- there is a mill site just south of the claim and the south corners of that may be in. It sits in the little bowl on the south side of the canyon... Mephisto lode and mill site 8801--

EDIT-
Doesn't appear to be a connection diagram.... and the tie to the common corner is 4200 ft....:-(

The Connection Sheet is Number 1773, but I can't find it on the GLO Website.

Time to breakout the new "sharp" shovel, and the tile probe buddy.

Looks to me like the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad went through that area. Maybe the old Railroad Drawings (or ICC Maps) could be of use.

where did you look to find that number? Do you think that they'd have that in Billings or Denver?

It's on the bottom of the Mineral Survey Plat.

The BLM "should" have it...somewhere!

In Utah, these are in the public room (on microfiche), most are also available online from the Utah BLM Website.

Ditto for Nevada, but the Nevada Scans are COLOR!
