Why would you have to set a rebar somewhere around it? It's sticking up a foot! If you can't find that thing, you have bigger problems. Tie some flagging around it and call it a day.

Nice find by the way.

It's already pink (feldspar).

Well, the pink granite stone may have been easy to find, but, it was a great clue to use in finding several other original survey monuments from this project.

Here are some of the monuments that I have found so far. Great work by the surveyor from 1950.

The first photograph is an iron bar. The other metal object (bent) may have been set as a witness. I was digging to find the spot where it enters the ground when I encountered the original monument.

The second photograph is of a granite stone with a drill hole characteristic of those set by the surveyor. You can tell how good it is by how little an area I had to dig to get to this one.

Finally, the third photograph is a concrete bound that was just below the surface. Needless to say, but, I was very happy to find these.

I find these all day long and yes sometimes there is a cross in the middle and 4 drill holes sprinkled around the top as well from years of 'calculations'

Those 2 words were stuck in my head last Friday. Show up at a 15 ac site to recon for a boundary survey. While van side finishing my coffee & organizing plans, an abutter comes over and we chat for a few. Turns out he used to work on field crews for various firms in the area & seems to know his chops.

Fast forward a few hours and I am poking around his yard looking for some pipes, he comes out and points me in the right direction "its about 15' off that barn corner, but your not going to find the pipe. It was sticking up 4" & I kept hitting it with the mower, so I pulled it and set an rebar & cap flush" I just stood there waiting for the punch line.
