I have a large DWG from the State covering my county. I'd like to make it more interactive with some PDF recovery sheets for control points. Is inserting as an OLE object the best way to do this? I'd hate to hate to slow the map down or crash it if there is a better way.
Any thoughts?
thanks.

OLE
What CAD are you using? Can you add hyper links or other attachments or do you need to print out these control sheets in your plans?

Yes, I have thoughts. First understand what OLE (Object Link Embedding) is.
Basically it is letting your host program allow an object into your program which will be handled by another program. For example, I might could send a Word document to my neighbor's kid with an embedded CAD drawing. If they don't have a CAD program that can handle it, the document would be useless.
As to making it interactive, contact LarryP. He might know something that might help.

I use OLE in Civil 3D to link PDF files to a base drawing so that the PDF info is available in the CAD drawing.
Most recently I linked many test holes for a reconstructuion project to the existing topo. Some of the PDF's have photos and sketches as well all PDF format.
C3D creates a box with a Adobe PDF signature in it. Double click the box and the PDF comes up (if you have Adobe Acrobat, of course)and you can peruse the data.
Works well.
do the OLE objects float around in C3D? my WORD and EXCEL objects tend to move, resize and just be annoying.
Chuck,
Yes, just what I did too. recovery sheets in pdf format. the icon links to the pdf, so while I am in my base drawing I can pull up all the nearby control.. and maybe Plat PDFs, record surveys etc. I just don't want to overload my Autocad LDD .
[sarcasm]Um, okay thanks Eric. Big Help. 😉 [/sarcasm]
The resulting files can be quite large (my last one was 53 megs) so some restarint may be in order.
I do not have problems with "floating" objects. I use C3D 2010 and just installed 2012.
