I have a subsurface, was real happy with it, had problems, had it repaired, it has never worked right since. I may still try to get it repaired again, but in the meantime....what is everyone's favorite metal detector and why?

Either Subsurface or the current Schoenstedt that looks like the classic one. Stay away from the pistil grip POS.

Sam, many of the ML-3 users have noticed an improvement over the older ML-1's. They like the sleek design and how lightweight the unit is. I still hear complaints about fences, but not as much, and certainly not as much as the Schonstedts.

Have used Magnawand/Houndog and the schoenstadt, and I prefer the magnawand.

I currently use an old school schonstedt and used one early on as well.

In between I have used the CST detectors, which are cheaper, but I like them as well. They have the erase feature, which is nice when you are working up against a chain link fence or some other metal object that is giving interference. The only problem with the CST models is that they are plastic at the top, and can be broken a little easier than the metal schonstedt. One other thing I do like about them is that they take AA batteries, which I keep handy in the truck in case they run out.

How often do you change the AA batteries versus the old unit's C cells? How do the operating costs in batteries compare?

The AAs last a long time (about a year or so with almost daily use.) It takes a lot of them though...like 8 I think.

> It's good to know that the Magna wand is now the "HoundDog" and comes with "fence ignoring" function which is pretty useful, the ML-3 is indeed a lot better nowadays.

> The CST locators (the Magna-trak) is fairly popular among general contractors so it may win the award for 'favorite' if you will.

The HoundDog appears to only have one knob. Does that control the sensitivity? If so, what controls volume?

Schoenstedt are the best.

Nate, I still log on occasionally. It is not as much fun, though probably better overall without the banter on politics and religion. I probably ought to add some offensive post to a magnetic locator thread (just kidding). I am going to order the new ML-3 this morning. I might do a report.

Graham Marion passed away...seems like half the old POB posters have passed away.
