I need to change the Lithium Ion battery in a Legacy E GPS receiver. I have looked at it, and it is not like any electronic device I have seen before. When the main 12v power Battery is changed, it looses it's ephemeris, and has to re-download before it keeps working. When I shut it down, I have to go through autodetect, to turn back on the radio (settings).

Have any of you changed it?

Thanks!

It's a Topcon. Aren't they basically the same?

They are similar, but there are different vintages/versions. We can work on all of the Topcon's provided they are not too old to get parts for, and we have some used parts. My tech in Springdale, AR is Mike Adamson. The office number is 479.927.2424 if you want to ask him some detailed questions.

Be careful what you put in there -- it's likely a lithium primary battery, not lithium-ion. Internal batts are generally tasked with low-current long-term duty, like maintaining system settings in volatile RAM when the system is powered down. Lithium batteries can last on the order of 10 years in that application; a lithium-ion battery would discharge and be useless in a matter of weeks without recharge circuitry.

It's best to use the part number on the battery itself to identify the correct replacement. And don't try to charge a lithium battery, unless you want to see it blow up!

Here's a pic of my battery

It is soldered in, with 2 tiny pins on the other side.
Gads. Gonna need me glasses to solder this!

The Tadiran TL-5186 is a lithium primary (non-rechargeable) battery. The good news is that they're cheap, around 6 bucks.

Thanks Kevin. Mike said to either change the keep alive battery real fast, (That is, don't take the old one out, and let her sit for a while, and put new one in) He said that was what he usually did. The other option from Topcon was to leave it hooked to power, but that method worried him more, and if there was any arcing, that I could doom the main board in the unit.

So, I ordered the Batteries this morning.

May as well keep these (Legacy E units) alive as long as I can.

I checked my battery voltage. 0.01 volts. That does not seem like enough!

Update

I ordered 2 Tadrian 5186 batts. Installed one this morning. All is good. EXCEPT it won't go back into the LEgacy E Case. It is 1 mm too thick. OK. where is plan B?

Update

I pressed it in tighter re soldered it, prayed, and got it all back in there.

Wow.
