I am not sure if this "GPS World" article has been linked here before.

Why Was Light Squared In Such A Hurry ?

I think one reason was to get ahead of Galileo. Galileo will also broadcast in the L1 frequency along with GPS and GLONASS. GPS has centered itself the midpoint of the L1 frequency at 1575 MHz. Every satellite broadcasts on the exact same frequency, and the signals are separated by imbedded codes. GLONASS and Galileo use the L1 band differently by spreading out the satellites throughout the frequency. As far as I know Light Squared is not testing against either GLONASS or Galileo. I believe their intent with Galileo is to enforce a "we got here first doctrine".

If the US Air Force finds that there is any interference with defense navigation, then those offending towers should be declared "hostile targets".

Also, if the Russians find that Light Squared is interfering with their military navigation system, I would invite the Russians to take out any offending Light Squared towers.

We won WWII because we could build Liberty Ships faster than the German U-boats could sink them. I doubt Light Squared could match that feat.

Why Was Light Squared In Such A Hurry ?

Not surprisingly, the matter has become a political issue. The surveying and mapping community is kept well advised, and active in contacting their respective legislators to express their concerns.

Monday June 27 at 11 AM EDT on the
ACSM Radio Hour (www.americaswebradio.com) as they discuss the current
status of the ongoing deliberations associated with the
LightSquared/FCC/GPS Community.
