I asked for a Disto and got it the same day. Somehow someone had one they weren't using and it landed on my desk.

It's good for entertaining cats too ;-).

The D5 has been on my wishlist a long time

I have not had an opportunity to test one and the few that have tried the lazar devices tell me that they do not work for them in direct sunlight.

After you have used it, give some feedback on how well it has performed for you in land surveying on trees, posts and other such objects.

😉

I'm mostly interested in using it to shoot new bearing trees from found monuments. Sometimes when following boundary we refresh the bearing tree tags. This may help although thick brush can be a problem. I've had good results using the red laser on the Leica TS. You find a hole where the red dot shows up on the object you want to shoot.

It says "Disto Plus" on it and is about the size of a smart phone but thicker and maybe a little bigger. Like a larger camera. Easy to carry.

It claims a 200 meter range although it says from about 30 meters use a target plate.

When you get much over 10 meters shooting anything that's not wall-size requires a steady hand. Over 30 meters and you probably want to use a reflective target and something to steady the Disto with, especially in bright sunlight.

In my truck I keep a short (6" or so) strip of reflectorized aluminum that had been removed from a power pole. I'll duct-tape or clip it to an item to be located and shoot the strip with the Disto. It's stiff enough that I can extend it from the corner of a building to get a wall length.

The Disto is a useful tool in certain circumstances, but not one that I use every day.

I use it for offset shots from gps points. I use a bracket on my rover pole so holding it isn't a problem and the disto is centered on the rover pole. I use the telephoto feature so it isn't a problem to site the object. It would be difficult to site a small target though. A u-pole, fencepost or building corner isn't a problem. It's great for getting the opposite stream banks, or stone wall shots.

It shot my neighbor's tree at 130'. It shot a stop sign at 230' but that has reflective material. I got 160' across the street to the neighbor's house. It has a little viewfinder on the side which is a little awkward to use.

This is in bright sunshine.

That is more than far enough for the contemplated use and it is usually not fully bright in the forest.
