I have a Leica TPS 1203 and an Allegro CX and I am thinking of upgrading to a TS16 with Captivate on a CS20 and was told that the radio handle would work on the TPS 1203 and the CS20 would drive it if I would have the latest firmware put on my TPS 1203 instrument. I would only use it if I needed service on the TS16, so that once I learn Captivate that I could continue to use it. Does anyone have any idea what it would cost to have the firmware updated?

Thanks,
Ed

Ekillo,

All of the products for the TPS1200 would fall under the TS12 listings since the product was renamed. I cannot find the listing for the Customer Care Packages for the TPS1200 or the TS12 for some reason. Let me call in and I can post the list price.

Mark,

I am thinking of purchasing a TS16i, most of my work is surveying for cell towers, both existing and proposed, would I get enough use to justify the extra expense of the i version? Would the TS16 be overkill for this type of surveying?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

The list price for the needed CCP for the TPS1200 is $ 450.00. That will get you a new maintenance date from the date of purchase plus one year. I am pretty sure the current version of firmware for the TPS1200 - FW Ver 9.01 - is probably the last one unless new communication devices are added. I doubt you will ever need another CCP to upgrade anything that is a future release.

On the TS16I...

Stepping out of the salesman shoes... Two things on the image capabilities....

1. Being able to see what the instrument is seeing from the data collector - I am convinced that this is the biggest advantage right now. When I am using the instrument robotically I can see if the prism is blocked by something between me and the instrument. I also use the point overlay on the camera view to see what points I have located or may have missed. In the cell phone tower - existing towers - it would be nice to be able to take releflectorless shots without having to be behind the instrument or to need a 90 degree eyepiece to take steep shots.... just use the camera view.

2. Saved images - most of the big boys now have office software capabilities that can calculate points from the photos save from taking some photo or panoramic from the instrument. I usually setup the instrument, oreintate, and then let the instrument start taking the photos I want while I walk to my first topo point or catch up on field notes. Leica's Infinity software suite has a nice routine for calculating points (XY and Z) from photos from the instrument. You need to have the "object" you want to calculate in images from at least two setups. Yu can use four different images I think... I know you can use three. We have donw allot of testing and have had really good results. If you demo this make sure you take a shot on say a corner of an inlet or manhole center that can be caught by the imaging from two setups. Calculate the point within Leica Infinity and then compare to the hard shot.

On Point 2 with tower sites.... when I was involved with the tower boom in the 1990's we had to do two or three sites a day if possible. Existing site topo seemed to go smooth if there were no access issues. The imaging would have probably...

A. Saved our butts and profitability if we missed something on a site that is a 4 hour one-way drive (There were a few of them)
B. Allow us to expand our product to the client in that we could have offered photos of the site and individual items such as existing antenna placements

I think the new speed and range of the ATR and the Power Search Filter function are really huge additions. The new processing power in the system allows allot of new functionality and improvements.

I basically try to run examples by customers who are trying to justify the extra expense. I think it would pay for itself quickly if you make procedures to take the imaging from the instrument setups to provide the possibility of using the imagery. The Infinity software is easy to learn and somewhat similar to LGO. Infinity is a long awaited software revamp for Leica. I am excited about where it will go. I am also waiting to see the unique uses users will come up with in the imaging capabilities.

Thanks Mark, that is what I was hoping to hear. I have a CCP on LGO for the next year, but was told that the proposed purchase of infinity would replace the LGO for processing the TS16 data, does it replace LGO for GPS also?

Thanks,
ED

Ed,

I believe the next release is scheduled for release next month and should have GNSS post processing added. Right now Infinity has modules for:

1. RTK Data Processing
2. TPS Data Processing
3. DNA Level Data Processing
4. Scan Data from MS50/MS60 processing
5. Imaging (for creation of points from TPS images)
6. Surface modeling and Volume Calculations
7. 3D and 1D Adjustments

The interface (layout) is more of a CAD-like environment for viewing the data. Infinity is using some of the same viewing engines as the HDS Cyclone software. You can work in a Plan view or a 3D view. Functionality has improved allot. I am hoping that in the next year Infinity will really start show some new capabilities with scheduled releases. First... LGO has to be fully replaced.
