I am looking into purchasing a robotic total station. Yesterday I watched a demo of the Lecia MS 50. Just wondering if anyone has one and can comment good or bad on it.

I'm with Eddie....

Look up Ralph Perez on linkedin, he posted a video of it in action, on a job he's using it on.

This might be the tool for everyone that wants to get into scanning but needed a tool that did more than scan.

I'm going to check it out at the LSAW conference and probably upgrade my GPS and Robot this year.

Anybody interested in a TCA1103 and a RX1250X SmartRover?B-)
Anybody know what the pair is worth?:-/
[sarcasm]Probably close to same as when it was new....[/sarcasm]:'(

Leica MS 50

Very nice video. Not a C-10, but certainly a valuable tool for when you need it.

What is the processing software for the office and did it come with the purchase?

Thanks.

I had a demo, read the pamphlet, and saw video's. I would like to get feedback from anyone who has used one for several months on real jobs. Trying to determine if the extra &7,000 is worth having a baby scannner.

We all know the spec info is in ideal conditions which most people rarely have.

What's your workflow?
If it's primarily boundary, save your money and bide your time. I imagine that in the not too distant future you'll get C10 type numbers (50,000 pps) from a total station. It'll be interesting to see what Trimble is trying to counter with.

You've read pamphlets and demos, what more is there?

Infinity is a basically a viewer, it will be LGO's replacement eventually. You can use Cloudworx which runs on Autocad or Cyclone. None of the above are free. Nothing is free with Leica.

We are taking delivery in February. We spoke to another Michigan firm that has been using one since last fall they really praised it. Trimble has had an instrument that scans for some time but it is real slow.

We went with the Cloudworx software which was actually cheaper and did more.

We got one January 3rd. Here is our overview highlights after 2 weeks.
We are using for topo work and the largest improvement to me is the lack of "targets" needed, as it is a "robotic total station" with a scanner. No need for "registration of point clouds" which has been a challenge in the past with scanning.
It is not the 1,000,000 points per second type of scanner....yet it can get a lot of points, at the 1000 per second rate.
The EDM will go over 6000 feet reflectorless....
Road topos, and most all topos is our approach and time will tell. In the office,
Microsurvey is what we are using to import the point cloud data and we are presently impressed.
With the MS50 it is not just the scanning, the robotics far exceed the other robot we have which is a Leica Viva 1200. When it does a reverse reading, it is very hard to see the instrument move as it is truly the fastest we have seen.
We are impressed with the range of the blue tooth, as you can control everything from up to 3000 feet from instrument... Have not been that far from it yet....
Last of all, I was controlling it from the truck last weekend, as the wind chill was below freezing, and the robot did not mind at all. I am a bit old and "missed the age of video games" - truly have not played one in my life.
Using the controller remote is probably like a video game to the younger generation.
Every day we are learning more about what it can do to help our work flows.
Having the ability to use the rover on the prism pole allows for creation of GPS control for resection of location of scanner.
Still have lots to learn as always. Optimistic about this new tool for sure.
