Hello everyone I'm new to this site. I have been surveying in California for about 9 years now. I'm planning on moving my family and career to Texas. I'm aware that the land system is much different than California's. Anyone have any information on Texas land surveying or know of any good books to study? All help is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Craig

We all share the fundamentals so the basis of surveying is the same everywhere.

As to Texas, the legal aspects and the ability to analytically solve boundary location takes study and training by the book, thru a mentor and to dive in neck deep with hands on land surveying.

Best place to start is the TBPLS website and read the Professional Land Surveying Practices Acts and General Rules of Procedures and Practices.

Where are you moving?

Agreed. Besides the Practices Acts and General Rules I spent the majority of my time studying the book "Decisions" by Ken Gold in preparation for the exam.

Thank you. I've definently got some studying to do. Hopefully I'll adjust well and able to find that mentor! We're looking to move to the Dallas-Fortworth area.

There is also case law on the Board website that are some of the fundamental decisions and underpinnings of Texas surveying.

Download a copy of "The best of Jeff Foxworthy" and listen to it. Also, Jerry Clower, and Willie P Richardson.

Carefully listen to these guys.

It will actually help you transition from California surveying, to Texas Surveying!

I kid you not.

In Texas we get a lot of boundary rules and laws from Spain and Mexico. I am sure California does as well. I do believe the Texas vara and California are not the same length.

Do this sample exam and see how you do.

Introduction to Texas Land Surveying by M. E. Spry
Decisions by Ken Gold

Mr. Spry's is probably 50 years old. Mr. Golds is less than 10 years old, but both are loaded with pertinent data.
