I recently purchased some used equipment. There is an old-looking Kern tripod. I have done some research online, and I could only find one that looks similar. Does anyone know what it is worth, or how rare it is? I have attached the link for the similar tripod.

Similar Tripod

Thanks,
DR

Looks like a standard Kern type tripod.

They are somewhat rare and usually go for a premium price on ebay, although the one pictured looks a like it was heavily used. Typically $120-$160 as I recall.

If you can't find out how it works drop me an email and I can attempt to describe it.

Looks like a standard Kern tripod. I used one quite a lot with a Kern DKM2A gun on geodetic work back in the 70's and 80's.

Cow of a thing to set up until you got used to it , then it was simple.

Cheers

Graham

Thanks. I am trying to decide if I want to purchase a level or total station to match it, or just get rid of it. I was hoping that it was rare or valuable. I don't plan on using it. Just thought it might look cool set up in the office.

I doubt if you will find a total station with a kern base unless it is 20 or so years old and a Kern. I think they got into digital instruments briefly before leaving the market. As for levels, they typically have a totally different base but I don't know about kern levels.

If you want to sell it, you should take off the cover and inspect and/of take pics of the head so the buyer can know that it is complete. Kern tripods had a lot of moving parts and if they got dusty or dirty would have all kinds of problems.

It has more value in the world as a tripod for someone with a Kern instrument than as something to put a lampshade on, but then the market rules.
