When the fellow comes riding up on a motorcycle and skids to a stop directly next to me and happens to be wearing a rather large handgun on his hip and says, "What the ^&%$ do you think you are doing down here?", it is only polite to calmly smile and say, " Trying to help the County find a way to close a portion of this old road that is no longer being maintained nor should be."
That changed his way of thinking very quickly.?ÿ He said he had assumed this particular road had been closed decades ago.?ÿ I showed him the rough draft of the notice the County intended to publish to begin the vacation action.?ÿ Nicest guy in the world after that.
Probably the craziest woman we ever encountered was on a very simple little survey in town where the property across the alley was going to be converted into a park.?ÿ I had surveyed the property on which she was renting the house a few years previously.?ÿ She saw my co-worker standing next to the little plug we had removed at the second corner we were in the process of shooting.?ÿ Madder than a wet hen and making nearly as much sense as one.?ÿ I chuckled as I saw her from 162 feet away sort of bouncing, waving her arms and generally ripping the co-worker a new one as he meekly pointed in my direction.?ÿ That gave me just enough time to prepare for my speech.?ÿ The first thing she couldn't understand was why I thought she didn't own the property that we were demolishing with our little divots.?ÿ I calmly explained that I knew the owner was Wilma J. as I had doublechecked that information at the courthouse.?ÿ Then I explained that Wilma had hired me to mark the corners of the property before she moved the rental house to that location and also provided her with information as to how high to raise it above ground level to minimize flood insurance costs.?ÿ She was not happy or any of the 7 Dwarfs.?ÿ She pointed to the hard surface of the nearby street and proudly announced that she knew the property reached out to the street.?ÿ She could not accept the concept that the city street reached so far into the area she had been mowing, declaring "Anyone can see THAT is a STREET."?ÿ So, I changed my tactics and asked her if Shawn was home.?ÿ That really caught her off guard.?ÿ She wanted to know how I knew she was living with Shawn.?ÿ Told her I was a neighbor to his grandparents and two uncles and that his father had worked with me for most of a year only a few years previously.?ÿ I had her drug-addled brain so messed up by that time that she went back into the house and never came out again.?ÿ I love my job.?ÿ I love my job.?ÿ I love my job.?ÿ The co-worker wasn't so sure about that anymore.
