On 4/7 I received email from Javad asking me to choose between the HPT404BT 4-watt UHF radio and the AW900BT 1-watt license-free radio. I expressed a preference for the former, even though it requires modifying my FCC license.

Today I received another message with a link to a page asking me to choose between the HPT401BT 1-watt UHF radio with battery and the HPT901BT 1-watt license-free radio with battery. I selected the former, but I'm concerned about the lower power rating compared to the 4-watt unit.

I'd be interested in hearing from folks with radio modem experience about the ramifications of the difference between 1-watt UHF and 4-watt UHF.

As an aside, Javad has extended the free trial from 2 weeks to 3 weeks in order to allow users to test the devices under a wider range of conditions.

Jim,

Have you heard of others getting test units? You probably threw your weight around (with your presence on the board) to get on the list early.

I am probably near the end of the list. Looking forward to my test run.

No weight to throw of which I'm aware. As far as I know the only guys who have gotten the kits are the ones who signed up to be support consultants (staff?) and traveled to San Jose for training. But the only information I have is from the email they appear to be blasting out to everyone who signed up for the test, so no special insight here.

The Email said that there are currently 20 units out in the field. I also choose the UHF option as I need the strongest radio available due to trees and such. I currently have a 35w topcon system and would get a 50-75w if I could. I returned the email replying that I wanted the strongest radio option. Sounds like my test system will be the 1w (or 4w) system like everyone elses, but then they are goving me the option to upgrade to their 35w radio at time of purchase for around $1300 extra.

As mentioned they did extend the timeframe from 2 to 3 weeks. They are also expanding it from 50 to 75 systems. They are supposed to be mailed out in either mid May, or Mid June (the date I choose)

For the special price they are offering, it may be hard to turn down after testing.
