wow, thanks again
One other issue I've seen with quantities is compaction and you should probably mention that to the contractor even though I'm sure he's aware of it. I've seen volumes vary significantly post-compaction and have also seen clients/contractors ready to start the finger pointing. In this situation if he's hauling off-site I'm reasonably sure the volume moved will be higher than what's estimated.
Another quick point I would make that you probably realize is that 10-15 more shots per pile would have likely helped both with the final calculated estimate and the calculations themselves as breaklines wouldn't have been as critical. I didn't use breaklines in my calcs, btw, and just ran it off the points, thus the slightly lower quantity on the sw pile.
Great post and a great little refresher for me as I haven't done field quantities in quite some time.
wow, thanks again

You and I got identical results because i did the same thing you did. Just let the software do its thing. When I did my calcs, The only thing I had to work with was the original coordinates, no pictures or anything else. I went on the assumption that sufficient shots had been taken to the right locations to define the correct shape of the piles. I haven't seen a photo of the SW pile yet or heard from Andy which interpretation of the pile is closer to the truth. My CAD simulation of the pile above shows a scoop out of the west side of the pile compared to the other interpretations. Probably the other interpretations are closer to the truth. If I had been doing this as a contractor for Andy, I would have first sent him my CAD depictions of the piles to ensure they reflected reality then submitted volumes.
This was a fun post and gave me a chance to try TBC volume calculations. I think TBC does a better job with volumes than TGO did.
Florida is not flat, I saw it with my own eyes. Just off of the interstate were these giant mountains that smelled bad, really bad.

wayne,
Hurricane Charley cut a swath across a small spit of land north of Captiva. No houses in that area between Captiva the island of North Captiva. Jensen's is still there, no worries. The cut is actually filling back in and may not even be there anymore. last time I worked on North Cap it looked to be re growing vegetation. if you google huricane charley pics you will see where I'm talking about. glad you had a great time!!
