I once got paid by a client, with one of these. I agreed to it, sight unseen. He said it was a survey instrument, and tripod, and a sight stick. It was in a wooden dove-tailed box. It had belonged to his grandpa.
I have never tried to use it. But, it might be ok to build a barn... As long as accuracy was not too critical!
🙂

I figured it had to be worth 3-5 hundred.
It is worth maybe 50$ or 100$ on a good day!

I was offered a sextant once as partial payment.
I would have taken it if it didn't have "U.S. NAVY" in large white letters engraved on it.
I received a Bostrom just like that as payment of a debt.
Mine has only one crosshair, it has to be set horizontal for grade and vertical for line.
It originally had double crosshair, one is missing.
Not worth installing the missing one.
@A Harris,
Maybe you could "re-gift" it to one of our esteemed comrades, with alot of fine wrapping paper... KM. Comes to mind... And Least swears... Um squares I mean!

Was it the esthetics of the lettering that you found objectionable, or were you concerned that the sextant was stolen??ÿ Bear in mind that public agencies often leave identifying markings on equipment they dispose of as surplus, so their presence is inconclusive as to provenance.
Jim,
That's absolutely correct about lingering owner's tags. Still, it gave me a little jolt about six years ago when I bought an instrument from Wendell and saw when it arrived several little plates saying "Property of Oregon State Police."
Cheers,
Henry

Yeah, I had previously purchased that instrument from Oregon Surplus, then sent it in for recalibration, etc. That was a great instrument, I loved it. 🙂
I have GPS receivers with asset tags from various DOTs and corporations.?ÿ To the best of my knowledge all were legitimately resold.
