Here is my setup:
Carlson 2010
Leica TCRA 1103 w/ TDS Survey Pro (RCS Collector)
I'm trying to read an ASCII file into Survey Pro. I can see the ASCII file when I load it on the data card and put it in the gun, but I can't get Survey Pro to read them in. I downloaded the Survey Link demo to create a .CR5, but I think that I should be able to read them in directly. Thoughts?
On the job menu ... import file ... pull down the file type and select .txt file (file needs to have a .txt extension) surf to the file and select it.

Randy is 100% correct. That is exactly how I do it, everyday.
Assuming that you start out with a Carlson .crd file (you stated that you are using Carlson 2010) just go to the points menu and at the bottom you will see "convert point format" which will open a window with the "CRD to TDS CR5" option, pick it and go through the conversion, now load the .cr5 file onto you data collector.
I use this system all of the time so I don't have to bother with the ACSII file conversion that just adds another step and another chance to mess up. I also convert my CR5 files into Carlson CRD files using the same process.

It should be that easy. However, I don't have an import option under the job menu. I'm using Survey Pro v4.40
Here is what mine looks like:
1)Create new job
2)Open existing job
3)Show job info
4)Edit/view coords
5)View rawdata file
6)Create rawdata file
MORE
1)Delete job
2)Delete rawdata
3)Print coordinates
4)Print rawdata
5)Select desc file
6)Show directory
?
I think that's what I was looking for. I don't have a points pulldown menu, though. I can bring up the toolbar, but it doesn't have the convert option. I'll have to find the command and type it in. Thanks.
I don't know of any flavor of Carlson that doesn't have a point function, I am sure if you look around you can find it.
Under "Settings" pick "Carlson Menus" and then chose "Survey Menu", that should bring up the points menu.
I just copy and paste the .cr5 file into my data card for use in the field, then "open an existing job" on the instrument, your system may work differently.

If this is TDS on-board then you likely don't have the option of importing a txt file to a CR5. Create the CR5 in Carlson or whatever. The architecture of TDS on-board is much like on the HP-48. I always use the "sequential" format instead of "non-sequential" for the CR5. A non-sequential file is smaller but can take forever to store a point. A seqential file is much larger as every point has a blank place holder, but is far faster for storing points.
