I have a Topcon Hiper+ rover and Legacy E base RTK that is producing accurate survey information and working well together. The Legacy E has an different firmware date than the Hiper+ and both are 8-12 years in age.
If the system is working well, and always check accurately with State published Geodetic monuments and coordinates. What is the benefit to update the firmware. I have fear something might get missed up during the new firmware upload to the equipment.
If I should update firmware is there a step by step for a first time firmware update, firmware update for dummies checklist.
There are advantages to updating, such as better performance, but the problem with Leica anyway is that the update wipes out my preferances, and that is a major pain in the rear. Metres back to feet, XY back to NE, standard rod height back to 5.60 feet, etc., and always worrying about what I missed.
Update Yes, ...BUT...
make sure you have complete reloadable copies of the current firmware plus listings of all current settings, in 2 different locations.
The second so that you can continue to compare apples to apples.
The first so that you can go back if neccessary.

Do Topcon provide details of the firmware versions on any of their web pages? If you can get access to this info you'd be able to check whether there are critical or beneficial items you need.
Sometimes updates can be important, eg for changes to Glonass satellite broadcast formats which have happened a few times in recent years.

Answer to your title question is, "Yes."
The answer to the rest of your questions is that where you bought your equipment should be able to help you...
But you can do it yourself, and there are instructions on the website, and in your equipment documentation.
