Since you typoed the 19 degrees as 19'30", I have to ask of the (BS 25') is actually supposed to be 25', or is it 25 degrees. 5 1/2 degrees is excessive, but 5' is very good for a compass traverse. If he was reading the compass down to the nearest 5', he must have had a compass with a big face/long needle and some manner of vernier on the circle.

I think the ALT+0186 is closer to a small zero, rather than an alternate degree symbol.

I would not bother, if I can get within 2' of a stone and cannot find it, I will give up surveying.
Using the modified bearing may give your initial description a better closure, but essentially you are looking at +/- 15' of bearing angle.
BTW, they do not give the N and E for the backsight as it creates too much opportunity for scrivener error down the road.

Thank you Melita. That jives with, and clarifies, what I read. I'll use the 0176 from now on so the ASCII interpretation will match the symbology.
May have been
an initial angle. Perhaps setting the exact backsight was too tiresome so he got close and recorded his initial error. I've seen the old verniers that are real tough to set exact 0's or initial angles.
Might just be fluff, though.
