A few years back (RPLS.com era) i asked a question about portable devices for capturing microfiche images, and i believe Rich Lieu posted a link to a slick device.

I wasn't allowed to buy one then but now someone more worthy has a need.... anyway- now I can't find the thing on google ... any help would be appreciated....

Note the second sentence of the Answer.

There is another machine, located in the Interlibrary Loan office on the first floor, that has imaging software and will allow you to save pdf or tif copies to a thumb drive.

So, that machine would allow you do do what you want.

Maybe that's what you should buy, or use.

that's what I'm looking for, nate. The link from the past from Mr. Lieu was for a tablet type accessory for a laptop that you plugged in with a usb - it had a tray for the micro fiche sheet that would show the images on the laptop and you captured them from there. I just can't find the device out there- but this machine has some filters on it that don't like a lot of marketing sites on the web- :-/

Here is a link to an online article, How to Scan a Microfiche to PDF, that may be of help. Appears any portable, preferably flatbed, scanner with sufficient resolution should work. Article mentions a minimum of 7,200 dots per inch resolution.

A Bing search of "portable microfiche scanner" provided a long list of options. Many of these were contract scanning companies. However, a few were like "Cannon Direct - DIGITAL RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS (DRS)" and should provide you a list to compare price/capability/portability. [sarcasm]Happy shopping![/sarcasm]
