The "future", forget about it. Whatever you buy, plan to have it paid in three (3) years. That's my old mentor's advice. He bought a lot of GPS and now GNSS systems over the years. They make it sound like your investment is good for ever, but once the subsequent model hits the store, the 5-year clock is ticking. I am not buying anything for the future. I'll cross that bridge when that bridge gets built and it's a solid one to cross.

Hi,
It depends on priority. I like to work at least 5 or more years with instruments which parameters/performance in field on top level. But, with same money you can buy old receiver in new case like hipperII, grx1, viva06, r4, r6 and etc.

i thought you have spread spectrum units don? on the bay or the sound i can get about 6 miles with the 2 watt UHF units, but they are still limited by arc'd line of sight and obstructive shadowing. the concave shape of the sound makes it perfect to hop from groin (jetty) to groin (jetty).

what was the cell service they used in the carlson? GSM in these parts is spotty so verify the service will work where you want it to work. my hiper XTs came with GSM, so we never activated them. they now have an interchangeable CDMA card, but why bother? the only network in these parts is pay as you go and i like running my own control with the pair of units.

I read a recent product review of the Champion rover. I heard it has a Trimnble board inside, and a dealer in Georgia has them built in China. The reivew showed no big flaws. The prices are about half of any other rover. It is set up for network GPS becuase the delaer runs a network, same kind as NC.
Might be worth a look. I am highly considering.

You might also look at a Geomax unit. Geomax is owned by Hexagon which also owns Leica, Novatel and Microsurvey. Hmmm, wonder what kind of board is in the Geomax? 🙂 It is a Novatel board with Advance RTK technology which (from one of their whitepapers) has a feature that is very similar to what the Leica 530 used. Quoting from that paper:
The AdVance RTK engine has an independent
quality check that is done to verify the initial solution
with more stringent reliability settings. If the results
of the quality check and initial solution agree, the
solution is considered verified. If there is
disagreement, the quality check process is restarted.
This process is invisible to the user.

I was very happy with my 530 but just sold it because of the FCC radio issue, the lack of Glonass and the fact that the WiDOT now has a CORS network operating.

From what I've been told, it comes bundled with the full version of MicroSurvey Field Genius (total station, robotic, GPS, roading etc).

The one I'm trying 🙂 should be here any day now from Allen Precision.
