Words of wisdom abound in this thread. Experience is a very good teacher. And know the limits of your skill and the vehicle's capability over the terrain you are considering.
The best four wheel drive I had was a 1942 Willys CJ2A jeep with mud tires. The old army tires did pretty well, too. As long as the belly was not on the ground, the jeep would go. The worst thing encountered almost every time I got stuck was logging skidder ruts. Those things are deeper than they look!
