There are several PLS in our office. We're all "silverbacks".
One, in particular, is the "admonishment" king when it comes to chiding the field crews. Although I'm sure he means well, his M.O. is something like this:
Let's say one of the hands leaves a backsight in the ground on a job. He immediately comes up with, "A real surveyor always checks the gear before they leave." (his initials should be MLB..;-) )
Needless to say the guys are always mocking him.
A month or so ago there was a flurry of stolen base units here and abroad. It prompted Mr. Admonishment to print several emails, post them on the bulletin board in the crew room...and then proceed to line out, in red, (with numbered bullets) the do's and dont's of gps base care. One was never set the base up near traffic..
We'll hell froze over today and Mr. Admonishment went to the field...guess what happened? Someone backed over one of the GR-3 bases. Thank God it wasn't the new GR-5s. Don't know the damage yet. It probably needs to go to the shop just out of precaution. The tripod and tribrach are toast.
One of the field hands called me and told me the story. I told him I was going to fall short of laughing because I don't wanna see any equipment get damaged...one thing for sure..Monday morning is gonna be entertaining...:-$
When I cut my teeth surveying the old man would always say: "you have to have the tools of the trade."... No matter what he forgot at the truck I had to have the tools of the trade... Go back to the truck and get a hook, schonstedt, flagging, water cooler, chew,. basically whatever he wanted/forgot... Tools of the trade!!!
