What method/tools do you guys use to find witness tree poster nails?
A pin finder doesn't seem to detect any ferrous material in the ones I've found.
Thanks
Woodworkers use a metal detector device to find nails in reclaimed lumber. That might be just the thing for this specific application.?ÿ
Poster nails are usually aluminum. You will want/need another type of metal detector, that picks up aluminum.
I've seen where steel nails seem to attract lightning. But, that's a side note.

You could try a carpenter's stud finder. Besides sensing wood behind drywall, their response may be affected by any metal.
I don't believe there would be a noticeable difference in lightning behavior between any metals.?ÿ Note, though, that aluminum is more electrically conductive than iron.
sensing wood behind drywall
really? I always thought they were just a magnet on a pivot, finding old screws and nails.
I learn something new every day, thanks
Back in your father's day that was all that was available.?ÿ Now the $20 electronic ones use capacitive sensing and are much more sensitive to what's in the wall.
?ÿ
I bought one of these. It detects aluminum. It only goes about 4" deep. But, it's cheap, and works.

It detects many kinds of metal.

I work a lot with of reclaimed wood, the metal detector that I posted a link to seems to be the best on the market for our purposes. It easily picks up broken tacks that people have used to hang up newspaper for insulation. The only complaint I have is if the wood is really wet it can give off a false reading.

I have an older model similar to this one.?ÿ It gives a strong indication when I slide it over a tack in a board. It finds iron, copper, aluminum, any metal. The difficulties are a) you have to use narrow sweeps and b) once you locate it it is under the device so you need to have marked the edges of the device to tell you where the nail is.?ÿ I dislike the "automatic" sensitivity operation and wish it had a sensitivity knob.?ÿ You have to get on the board before you click, and when you are close to the target probably release and click again to reset the sensitivity so it doesn't max out.
I bought one these "carrots" for a little less than $20 on ebay.
It seems to do what I need (find aluminum nails within 1-2") . Thanks
