Good Day.
For you guys who had to upgrade to windows 7 machines, how do you download your equipment? Unfortunately, our last XP computer died and we have a DL101C digital level that we are trying to get information from but can’t seem to get it connected to the computer (win7 box). I have an USB to serial adapter; I know that they are iffy at best.
Anyone experience this issue and what was your solution?
Thank you in advance!
I purchased a serial card and installed it in the computer, easy to do and works great. I never could get a USB to serial adapter to work under Windows 7 Pro
The FTDI chipped serial to usb adapters are not very expensive and are supposed to keep the same com channel no matter which port they are plugged into. I have one and it works fine.
If you get an adapter with the Prolific chips, make sure you get a real one such as from IOGEAR or another reputable manufacturer, not a cheepie from China. Prolific has made some changes in drivers to detect fake chips and it reportedly causes problems even after you go back to a real chip. I have one of these and it works fine too, but I've never used an adapter with the fake chips.
After plugging in the adapter, go into your Control Panel/System/device manager/ports and see which is the new COM port. Mine shows up as "USB Serial Port (COM15)". That (COM15) would get entered in your program as the connection port.
FYI, Windows Mobile Device Center is the equivalent to Microsoft Active Sync.
It may be installed, otherwise you will have to download it from the Microsoft website.
If I remember correctly, I had to download the Vista 64 bit version, because none was listed for Windows 7, but my memory is sketchy.
Always used a cheapo USB to serial adapator myself but it did always take a bit of messing around to get the settings right.
I was getting corruption until I discovered a new setting in Windows 7 under "ports" in "device manager". Had to switch off FIFO buffers and then it ran fine.
Thank you!
Huge thank you to all you who replied with helpful suggestions!
I was able to get connected by messing with the comm settings on the level. Comm needs to be set to MANU so that you can be sure that the baud rate is set to 9600.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
