What if he put a marker at the beep? Would you dig down 6 feet to disprove his location?

The point isn't to disprove the beep location, it's to prove the correct location.?ÿ (Deepest I've gone so far is 4 feet.?ÿ I hope I never have to go any deeper!)

@jim-frame Exactly!

I suppose the problem isn't the center of the magnetic indication being off, but for a deep rod the indication is so broad you can't really tell where center is. True?

Narrowing down the center is one problem, but I think the lean -- however subtle -- of the vertical object can also project a misleading signature at the surface.?ÿ And more than one iron object can really confuse things (see map excerpt below).

One person doing the digging and referencing four other things like this, makes it a lot easier to accept that "beep" (as well as have some real numbers to use for calculations as to where exactly that beep is).?ÿ

That excerpt is from a Record of Survey filed for a county monument preservation project.?ÿ I've done several over the years; on that one there was a total of 29 monuments to be searched and replaced with standard county well monuments.?ÿ Yes, I did a lot of digging and referencing, but I had a helper (though I've done some others solo).?ÿ ?ÿI was also well-paid for the job, so no complaints from me.

@skeeter1996 What particular model??ÿ Is it SDS, SDS+, or some Chinese proprietary bit-shank style? Can you post a link, please?

@sergeant-schultz

I don't remember. I just Googled gas jackhammer and the Chinese one was the cheapest. I got the bits from somewhere in the US. They cost more than the jackhammer. The jackhammer came with a chisel bit

A Honda 2000 and a Bosch 745 or a dewalt will be the best $2000 you have ever spent. I use the hell out of mine. Not only for digging up stuff, but I set all of my gravel road corners 10inches deep so the county blade never gets to em. Also when you have to set 50 rebar for your new sub in a day you wont get tennis elbow. Drilling in conc for mons? No problem.

Bonus is I keep a tiny microwave and I can have a warm lunch.
