I was attempting to make a joke that combined the idea of the Martian Government issuing a patent (as Dave Karoly had mentioned) and the comment about a quitclaim to the Mackinac Bridge (as eapls2708 had mentioned). It must be Monday. 😀

There can be truth in humor

12-6 Patents

Sovereigns issuing patents to land do not guarantee title. A patent is merely a quitclaim to any interest or rights possessed by the sovereign. If the land had been previously patented to others or if the patent is contrary to law, it is without force.

I have millions of potential pet rocks available to anyone who wants to haul them away. Wasn't about to buy one, even as a joke gift for someone else.

I do have a nice supply of stones that could be used to replicate surveyor-set stones quite nicely. Would be handy, like rusty old rebar, to be FOUND at the exact spot you are seeking one. Keep a few in the survey chariot at all times, just in case.:-O:whistle:

That reminds me of the time we went out to bring in elevations off of an NGS monument. When we got to the place the monument was supposed to be set, we saw the brass disc in a chunk of concrete, busted off of the base and laying about 10 feet away.

So we carried that benchmark with us. We had elevations anywhere we went!
