Dave, Thanks for the link about the Fairfax Line. It would be interesting to read Thomas Lewis' journal sometime. Do you know if a reprint of it is available anywhere?

I've got to get to one of those Rendezvous some year. This year is out unfortunately. Where will it be in 2011? If I start planning now, maybe I can get there.

Yes, a reprint at a modest price is available from Roger Woodfill at Surveyors Historical Society. This is a transcribed & typeset copy of the original journal along with supplementary material.

Or you can send me your snail mail address and I'll send you a CD with pictures of the original journal. I went to the UVa library one time and asked to see it and maybe photograph it. Expected a lot of hassle. Instead they hand it to me and said to do what I wanted - no questions asked.

Dave & Rich

Thanks, Rich. I'll see you Saturday.

Dave,
Sure enough - there it is on the SHS website:

The Fairfax Line. A Historical Landmark
5.5" x 8.5", paperback, 99 pp. Copyright by the Shenandoah County Historical Society in 1999, was first printed in 1925. Contains maps and photographs, and it includes surveyor, Thomas Lewis's 1746 journal of the survey.
Nonmember Price: $12 Member Price: $5

I'll take Rich up on his offer to let me borrow his copy. If I want my own though, I believe $5 (member price) is much better than $179 - I don't need an original.

Thanks.

Bring five bucks with you on Saturday and you can save the $5 postage and handling fee.

The copy I have is new. It's one I had for display at the annual conference. I was just going to give it back to Roger Woodfill at the Rendezvous next week. A five dollar bill will take up less space in my car.

:good: Will do.

I don't know that I can still get into my white "topog" pants (they seemed rather snug in 2007), but I'll try to wear something appropriate.
