Out west the last few days-
the reason for my trip-

.
.
a close up-

.
.
.
re-habed this corner-

.
.
to this-

here's the remains of the SW BT- it was a 22 in. tamarack in 1891.

I was able to push the prism pole into the rot about 1.3 ft. i wrapped a Mag nail in flagging and dropped it into the hole when i left.
..
.
here is a classic- - can only see the makes in the right light.
we pulled this up and brushed it- alot- didn't see any marks- looked at other stones-
got it wet looked some more let it dry- put it back- measured around a bit and after a bit- i just stood up over it on the north side and looked at it- crewster was off to the side writing some notes for a ref pin we set and the 1/4 just came into forcus.
i said - there it is- come here and look at this..
he walks over-
I said stand right here- left foot here right foot there- He does.
now just look at it. he does- for aboput 25 seconds he looks and then his eyes pop wide open- it's right there!!! and he points at it . you can barely feel it with your fingers when you touch it.

we finished up and after a few hours i walked back into it with some super glue to repair the crack and the camera. i took this picture, but the light had changed and you can't really discern the mark now.

just the stone.

Armchair quarterbacking here, but why put the materials and effort into replacing a perfectly good plugged pipe with a nice big capped something-or-other at one corner, yet leave a rotting stump corner with nothing more than a mag nail lying in it?

I replaced the YPC in the pipe because is does not-and never did-meet the minimum stds for remonumenting a PLSS corner. I pulled out the YPC and inserted a 3/4" rebar with a 3.25 inch aluminum cap attached which I epoxied inside the exiting pipe. about $10 in materials to bring the corner up to standard. (also faster than removing the entire 1" pipe and replacing with a 2.5"X30" alum. pie with 3.25" AC.)

Our SOP is to bring any PLSS corner we recover as part of our survey, that is not the original GLO monument, in poor condition, and/or does not meet the minimum standards, up to standard. we also file a corner record on each corner to document our work and the condition of record accessories.

The BT stump is an accessory to the section corner that was re-moned with the AC. It's about 205 links away from the corner and out in the pasture. It only got a mag nail for several reasons- 1st I was only memorializing it's position. It's in a field with livestock that has been pretty well cleared. The magnail is well below the level of the existing ground in the event that the owner demos the stump while dragging the field during routine maintenance - In other environments, I'd likely drive a witness post into the stump/hole, but that's not a good practice in this instance. The other remaining BT stump for the corner was in quite a bit better condition and located in a place that seemed likely to allow it to remain intact. I drove a 3/4" X24" (with an "X" chiseled on it) rebar into the center this stump and turned sets to that point for precise/accurate accessory. I also tied the 2 trees that were taken as references by the individual who set pipe(one is now a dead snag). I tied one nearby rebar with YPC and noted that two BTs that were in evidence when the pipe was set have since been destroyed by landowner improvements.

The stone was not re-monumented because it was the original Monument, although we did establish 2 new RPS- 5/8"x30" rebar with 2" AC set flush nearby.

Hopefully this explanation gives you more insight into my procedures. BTW - looking at the top picture of the stone- the "4" of the 1/4 is evident- more so than in the 2nd pic.

I see a "4" in the fence post right above the wire. Do you suppose that is the mark of some surveyor?
