One evening this week my long time neighbor, to the right of me, invited me over for a BBQ dinner. I was happy to join him, his daughters, and his sons in law. My neighbor, to the right, is a contractor, and both of his sons in law are in construction as well. I hadn??t been there for more than 10 minutes when one of son in law, had a story of something going terribly wrong. He explained the result of the problem and then he said ??It was a surveyor error?.?ÿ I laughed and responded ??It??s ALWAYS that darned surveyor isn??t it?? That is when he remembered that I was a surveyor. So we all got to talking about problem projects of our past. Fun stuff like: Home builders finding a PC of a curve and using it for the property corner, starting a 9 story building on an incorrect benchmark, and then not meeting the skybridge elevation on the 7th floor, calling a grid intersection a building corner that wasn??t??.
That BBQ reminded me of a few months ago, when I went to my other neighbor??s house for their son??s 1st birthday party. This neighbor, on my left, is an attorney. As I was enjoying some tamales and fajitas one of the other guest starts talking about a case they were defending. She was a land use attorney. It was then I realized that I was in the midst of a bunch of young attorneys that were discussing land disputes.?ÿ And of course eventually, it was a surveyor who was the scapegoat.
Here I was, in both situations, the only land surveyor. And here I was, in both situations, the one at fault.
Looks like we're all "Stuck in the Middle With you"
