This could go on alot of our gear. And, be attached by various means.

"Even better: the Crowd GPS feature uses the GPS of all the phones in the TrackR network (tens of thousands of them) to locate it."

So, if it gets near somebodies cell phone, it uses their Bluetooth, to show you where your device is...

It might work for us.

1 yr battery life
no monthly fee

Down side...it has to get near a cell phone with trackr app. no app, no tracking.

If this does not work out, i'm sure that a similar product will..

Nate,

I have a Trackimo http://trackimo.com/ for a safety net on my drone. It has GPS, WiFI and cell phone to send a signal and GPS info to a website every 60 seconds.

Topcon/Sokkia use similar technology in their Robotic Total Stations, they call it TS Shield.

Komatsu dozers, excavators, graders, etc. have been using it for years, sending diagnostics and GPS locations back to dealers and owners.

This sounds great for things I use that might get stolen. But things I loose, they are typically in the middle of nowhere. I searched longer than I care to admit for a yellow data collector in a 20 acre field of yellow flowers last spring but there was no cell signal to be had for several miles. And no other cell phones around.
