Okay...trying to show off some pictures. Here is my little display on top of a cabinet:
The engineer's chain (1' links, 100 ft.) Also part of a slide rule
four-pole chain, (or should I say two, 2-pole. The round tag is the 50-link mark. Notice the clip up the link from the 50-mark
One handle says W& LE GURLEY TROY N.Y. The other says, 66 FT IRON NO. 10
One handle has a clip by it. I think that is to unclip and clip by the 50-link mark to make it into a two-pole chain.
also included is a CURTA calculator, an HP41CX, a compass and some various books and carrying case for the compass.
I hope that worked.
Some pretty good resolution for fifty-year-old photos......;-)
Awesome photos! I've never seen the clip before. Cool!
Love that HP infrared printer. I still have mine along with three HP-41's.
very cool gear.
i love these survey porn threads.
somebody was a big dog back in the day with that gear.
Is the face on the compass correct? It seems to me that East and West are reversed. If the needle floats over the face, East should be on the left and West on the right.:-)
Think that compass was for the left handed guys.

it's fun to look at the old stuff
then you realize where some of today's headaches originated
Yeah but .....
no batteries needed.
I agree. I like the ones with the "E" on the left, and the "W" on the right. But a lot of compasses are this way. Notice, too, hooks on the top of the "sights". I think that may have had to do with suspending the compass like from a sting line of sorts. Maybe there is someone on line that can explain the different uses of some of these compasses.
Read the direction that is right side up when looking down the line. Also on many nautical compasses there was a magnifying glass to make it easier on the helmsman, it was always close to the wheel and the card was marked as this one is.

I would have replied sooner but I heard CHAIN! and I started to run. Worked for to many old timers I guess.
Thanks Jud!
Bob....don't you stop when you hear "chain!"?
Those pics make a real surveyor go
OOOOOOO!!!
O yeah!!!!
Thanks for posting.
Nate
Oh..yeah!!
wheres the buttons to push??!!
😉
Not at all what I was expecting to see, but very nice. I was expecting something from the lunatic fringe.
First call was to get up and run with it, my call back was to let them know I had run out of "CHAIN". Jeez, a hundred years ago. I'm gettin' to old for this sh*t.
Oh..yeah!!
They're right there on the side next to the batteries.:-D
> .... I was expecting something from the lunatic fringe.
well yeah.....This is a land surveyors site afterall....
It makes me a little sad that the 41CX fits right in with the theme of your display. Doesn't seem like that long ago that it was the hottest thing for a party chief to have in his truck.
