[CAUTION- this is a re-broadcast of a post from the other board]

SWMBO and I made our first home opener at Fenway Park on Friday. Thankfully after a dismal start (0-6) the Red Sox roughed up the Yankees a bit and pulled out a 9-6 victory. We got to see Dustin Pedroia (the destroy-ah) hit a home run to start the Red Sox and also saw A-rod smack one out of the park. It was a good game, and one of the highlights for me was that YAZ threw out the Opening Day pitch!!

Sunday's forecast ws for spring like weather and this week is supposed to be rather wet and rainy so We decided to do one of our favorite spring time surveys and that is the Bi-annual Sesuit Harbor hydro survey. This annual dredging project requires a pre-and post dredge survey so we head out in the spring for the pre-dredge and then again in June for the post dredge. Sometimes we even go back in the Fall to monitor conditions. I like this little harbor; It's where I have frequently launched my sailboats before heading north to Provincetown or East towards Brewster.

Although it sounds primitive, this job requires rowing and leadline depths. We do this at low tide mostly during the slack tide. We have a 10' tide here so at low tide we're dealing with a maximum depth of 12 feet. I enjoy rowing and there are only 4 transects required by the Conservation Commission, so it's a nice couple of hours on the water, and we get to pick the day! We arrived about 9:30 AM and were home for lunch by 1 PM.

This year my daughter April, who is 14 and a high honors student in 9th grade, came along to help out. SWMBO and I took care of the water work and April did all the upland data collection with our handy Sokkia RTK GPS!!!
The weather did hold out and it was a beautiful day. The total length of April's walk with the GPS was slightly over 2 miles, and all of it on the beach or rocky shore. Not easy walking but it was a nice day!

Don-

Good to see April at work.

In bare feet !

On those stones, OMG !

When will she be venturing to North Aboyne to be a summer student ?

Cheers,

Alexandra (SWMBO) and Derek

Don,
looks as a very nice job to me, coast surveying can be a lot of fun and always nice if the children are interested and can lend a helping hand.
I would have kept my boots on I think ... but then if my 18 year old daughter would have assisted me she sure would have been barefoot to.

Chr.

Thanks Chirst and Derek. I did keep my boots on that's for sure... And April spent her time practicing ballet on the beach while we were doing the water work. That's when her shoes came off! I did help her out on some of the rougher shots, not that she wasn't willing!!
