The average layman has no clue what is entailed in our work and the fact that the vast majority of us take great pride in what we do and the care put into how we do it. Surveyor X provides a proposal for $2,500 knowing what it will take to properly do the job. Surveyor Y says he can do the same for half the fee with the intention of taking every short cut under the sun. 90% of the time the cheaper guy gets the work because the layman has no idea as to what should really be involved in the process.
On top of that there is always the guy working out of the basement with no insurance or over head that will beat both X and Y in pricing.

One time, I FOUND a rebar, with cap, laying on it's side, about 15' from where a corner should have been.
I concluded that the "Surveyor" who was supposed to set it, found the hill too steep, and THREW the capped rebar in the general direction of the corner, calling it "set".
He could then SAY that "It musta gotten pulled by somebody"....

(Just another shortcut...)

That is exactly what has happened to any of mine you happen to find so far from their intended location.

That includes the one the rodman through as far as he could out into a pond. It probably drifted to the bottom somewhere within 20 feet of the mythological tract corner that was not going to get set in any other fashion other than on paper, with a reference bar near the water's edge on the two sides extending towards the middle of said pond.

As I remind my field guys of often (and sometimes the engineers) integrity is what you do when no one is watching...

Judging by the size of that udder it's been too long since the last milking.

Surprised the spelling police haven't chastised me for using "through" instead of "threw" in the sentence quoted.

Sorry, just catching up so I hadn't seen it yet.

But, you are a high-ranking member of the spelling police, so write yourself a ticket.

They tried but riot gear wasn't the best tool for the task. On another thread, they did better.
