Found this nice bark scribed bearing tree last month. The 2786 is a CA LS #. Originally scribed in the mid 50's, the 20" douglas fir tree is now about 48". Bark scribing was/is done to save time, especially on thick bark trees like the doug fir. Also done to avoid the sappy, stringy conditions just under the fir bark. Also to avoid the bloody knuckles you can get trying to scribe down in the hole created if you do chop through the bark. It often doesn't stand up to the test of time but this one is doing well.
