Started out using log tables for calcs, but soon bought my own HP41C. Being the last in the pecking order, I rarely had use of the EDM, calculator and locator.
We had a Wild T1 and T2 with steel tape (we called it a chain). did a lot of topos by chain and offsett. We were afforded the occasional luxury of a top mounted Wild Distomat EDM for long lines and control.
We did a lot of real chain surveying in college. when I went on my own I spent a year or so using a Hilger and Watts theodolite with steel tape. Did my own drafting was by hand (no stencils).
I dont at all miss having to clear lines to the ground to be able to measure distances.
