I have been using 5/8" rebar (with plastic cap) for corner monuments. I want to start using 1" iron pipe (with cap). For you that use pipe: Where do you buy it? Do you buy a long piece and cut it or buy it pre-cut? Do you use any other tools (block of wood, something else) to set them?

I used to cut it myself but it got to where the pipe cutters are so cheaply made they don't work well after only a few uses.

I gave up and started paying the hardware store to cut a 20' stick of 1" galvanized iron pipe into 2' long pieces.

The plastic caps for 5/8" rebar I used are also a plug which fits a 1" pipe but maybe you know that.

I used a pipe driver obtained from Lo Ink. That way the top of the pipe isn't burred or destroyed.

The local plumbing supply house carries a wide variety of precut black iron pipe nipples in various lengths.

I have a cutoff saw (chop saw). Cuts up to about 3 inches. Cut lots of rebar (two at a time). For pipe you might also want a reamer to take the sharp edge off the inside. I grind the sharp edges of rebar with a bench grinder. You can get rebar sheared but it tends to drive crooked and the caps don't fit on the sheared ends very good. I've heard you can get a tool to bevel (sharpen rebar) but I've never bought one of those (probably expensive). Long term the tool investment will pay off plus I use the tools for many other things.
