It seems that the survey I did a week or so ago, about a guy not accepting a monument by 0.06' and set a new tag, has prompted my clients attorney to refer another of his clients to me.
This time a second monument was set 10 feet +/- away from the first one set. Both set by the same guy and now a concrete block parking area that was clear on the 1st go around is over line.
I did a site walk today and I just do not see how the surveyor even got started. The street is hillside, in Pasadena (Oh Joy!), 1925 subdivision, rock and concrete curbs and gutter, 21 foot wide street. Those improvements must date at 1926 or so. I paced 17 feet, heel to toe, between gutter edges and got 17 feet. With a 1.5' gutter on both sides, the R/W line would be on the curbface..if the improvements were built centered on centerline.
A Parcel Map was done in 1984 across the street. The PM shows some good solid pipes that were found and the PM stated that points of control of the street were to be placed before 1986. It's all curve/linear and the 'to be set' spikes were located at BC's and EC's.
One problem...they are not there.
It's possible that the asphalt was overlaid or ground down and overlaid. If the latter, then the spikes would have been destroyed..maybe. Some guys would set centerline monuments below the surface a bit. We wont know until we get control up and start sweeping.
This should be another fun one. It will give me another opportunity to make a record and file it. The only down side I see is this heat. Coming back my inside thermometer read 113°. Hopefully, cool weather will start again.
Now I have the pleasant, or unpleasant, chore of calling the RE that did the survey and asking him for some input on what the heck he used. Maybe I wont call him and just start fresh. I figure 8-12 hrs just to get control up.
Dont mind me..just babbling a bit.

Paul,
According to the news I saw this evening the 113 degrees is a Record for LA since they began keeping temperature records.
Just an average summer day in the Permian Basin or the Chihuahua or Sonora Deserts.

Stephen..If I ever get a chance to work in 'the Permian Basin or the Chihuahua or Sonora Deserts' you can fly over and beat the crap outta me until I gain my sanity 😀
I just checked the weather and believe it or not, tomorrows temp is supposed to be 88°. That's quite a drop in one day. I sure hope it happens.
I went and bought a microwave at Best Buy. 1000 watts, turntable, all the bells and whistles...paid $ 80 bux for it. Man how prices have dropped for those.
I need to get in touch with John K Newville RCE 13095. The board has him listed as active and living in Florence Oregon. His tag number was on quite a few 2" pipes that were found in 1984 along Manford Way in Pasadena. I really need to talk to him about that survey.
I put all that in on the slim chance he or someone that knows him will help to get me and him together for a powwow.
Paul,
I have surveyed in 2 of them and near the 3rd.
It can get hot. The worst I have seen was at Quartzite, AZ, on June 16-18, 1990.
It hit 124-127 then, depending on which thermometer you looked at.
I tell people I spent a month there one week and I was only there 3 days.

BTW, Here it was 75 for a high yesterday and down to 50 last night and 75 for a high today.
