We did a topo of a small tract that is to be used for a small commercial business. The client furnished a "site plan" drawn by someone I have never heard of. The site plan was drawn using an old boundary survey and no topo. Even if it was a perfect world, the site could never be developed the way this guy has it. The only credentials I can find for the draftsman is a logo on his plan that says he is a member of the American Institute of Building Design. I went to their website and I am not impressed. Has anyone heard of or dealt with a member of AIBD?

They've sure been around for a while in Texas. Back in the 1970's, many of the house plan designers who couldn't get licensed as architects joined the AIBD and claimed the credential of "Building Designer". As I recall, there was a multi-story wood frame building that collapsed in Round Rock about twenty years ago or more that was the work of an AIBD member, the main problem being with the design, not the contractor.

AIBD - American Institute of Building Design has been in existence for over 60 years. We do hold our members to a high standard that can include testing and yearly CEU quotas. We also regulate the use of our moniker. We appreciate it when we are directly notified of any concerns you might have with any member or someone claiming to be a member. You can check to see if the person you are dealing with is a member by going to:
http://aibd.org/for_consumers/find_a_design_professional.php
and if you have a complaint please fill out and return the following form:
http://www.aibdmember.org/resolutionform.pdf

Thank you,

Western District Director - AIBD

Sorry but I'm not impressed by your organization. And from what I read, even if I file a complaint and you act on it, the person would merely lose his membership. Doesn't seem like much of a deterrent.
