Surveyors are cheaper than lawyers.

They didn't have GPS back when the large tracts of land were laid out in the 18th and 19th centuries. The work was good for it's time but it was only so accurate. Minor errors compound themselves over a long run.
Apply GPS accuracy to old lines and things can get wonky.?ÿ

The comment misses the rule of monuments over measurements. That limits the effects of accumulated errors. Otherwise it seems a fairly accurate comment, and the last line is very true.
