While on vacation in Indiana, I decided to visit the Initial Point of the 2nd Principal Meridian just south of Paoli, IN. Here is a picture of my son and I standing on the monument stone that was set by U.S. Deputy Surveyor Ebenezer Buckingham, Jr. on September 1, 1805. It controlled all of the Public Land Surveys in the State of Indiana.
5th Principal Meridian - Initial Point
This photo was taken about 5 years ago. I had left a MS Summer Seminar in Oxford and we were heading up to Hot Springs and Mount Magazine for some vacationing and stopped by the stone of the Louisiana Purchase. I have the M.A.P.S. hat on that they gave out with registration.
BTW, they do grow up fast. Our son was 5 at this time.
Look me up next time, brother. Here are some recent photos from (of) my Dad at that location:
Brad,
Here is my picture next the sign as well.
and here is me pointing it out.
The park that it was in was pretty grown up, but I could still walk on the narrow trail down to the monument. Any idea why it was placed at that location? There doesn't seem like there is anything prominent nearby.
Tallahassee Meridian - Initial Point
Here is me (with the white shirt & tie) with some of my classmates from the University of Florida during a field trip to Tallahassee for my Surveying and Mapping Practice class (circa 1998).
It was removed recently to renovate Cascades Park and should be replaced sometime later this year. I just hope that the contractor hires a surveyor to put it back in the right place.
