2 Vt. towns finally settling 248-year-old boundary dispute over St. George and Shelburne
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Two Vermont towns that were never quite certain of their dividing line are a step closer to settling the 248-year-old dispute.
A Vermont legislative committee gave preliminary approval Thursday to a survey that establishes once and for all where the town of St. George ends and the town of Shelburne begins.
The discrepancy dates to 1763. It came to light most recently in 2007 after someone built a house on land that both towns thought was theirs.
An arbitrator ruled that each town would give up a small bit of land to the other, and that the house will be considered part of St. George. Now, the towns need the Legislature to sign off on a new survey of the land.
